Title: Get Your Head Out Of Your Annoyance

What dominates your thoughts is what determines your direction–you are what you think! Stop living in the lies, the patterns, the strongholds, and pretension–change the way you think.

C: Curious about the feels
H: Handle on the stronghold
A: Apply God’s truth
N: Never provide the stronghold space
G: Give it over to Jesus
E: Experience Freedom

Annoyance comes from unmet expectations and his a mild form of anger. Ephesians 4:26 says, When you are angry, don’t let it carry you into sin. (The Voice).

ANNOYANCE UNCHECKED IS NEGLECT. Perhaps it’s neglect of people and things that need help. Sometimes it’s neglect of our spiritual house and life.

ANNOYANCE SHIFTS ATTENTION TO WHAT NEEDS ATTENTION. Instead of neglecting what needs our attention, our annoycance can drive us to make a change where God desires it.

ANNOYANCE PROTECTS YOUR SPIRITUAL HOUSE. This is your house!
1. PEEVED – Get angry about what doesn’t belong in your life.
2. PURGE – Get rid of what doesn’t belong.
3. REPLACE – put things back in your life that belong.

As you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you.

Questions for Individuals/Connect Groups:

  • This week Brad talks to us about annoyance and how our annoyance unchecked is neglect. What do you think about that? Do you agree or disagree with that statement? What annoyances have you had in your life that direct you to a bigger problem?

  • Looking at the scriptures he used, he used 2 Corinthians 10: 4-5. The author of Corinthians was Paul. He wrote this to the church of  Corinth. The church there was having issues with things that were untrue. He is encouraging people to fight against the ideals and thoughts, not the actual people. Why is this an important distinction to make? Why should we separate this difference?

  • What does this mean in your own life? What are some things that you need to take captive that you know are untrue? What does the annoyance have to do with any of these? How does annoyance bring us to some of our truths?

  • Brad explains to us that annoyance protects our spiritual house. What did you think about this analogy? What rung true for you in this? How do you see this as a call to action to do something that Jesus is asking us to do? Now spend some time praying over each other. In John 14: 23 it says those who love Jesus will obey him. Pray for each other that you may be able to obey exactly what God is asking you to do. List off the things you know God is asking you to do, try to be as specific as possible, so the prayer can be targeted.

  • Questions for Families:

    • This week you learned about the story of Zacchaeus. What was something you remember about that character in the Bible? Why do you think they told his story?

    • Think about Zacchaeus and tell us if you and him have any similarities or differences?

    • What was Zacchaeus annoyed about? What did that make him do?

    • What are some things that you are annoyed about? How do you think the annoyances can be used as a way to make change? Now, ask God to give you a different lens on things that annoy you and to help you how to change things about them.
