The purpose of the parable is to teach one thing.

You didn’t intentionally, deliberately, purposefully, begin to follow Christ.

This parable isn’t against effort, it’s against control.

That harvest is not dependent on the sower. The Kingdom is not dependent on you.

You don’t have to be in control to be confident God is using it.

As you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Why do we expect a formula for faith? What is lost when we cannot control the steps that it takes to experience the kingdom of God?

  • In what ways is not having control a scary part to faith? Where is it relieving?

  • At times when we are not in control of the growing, we assume that the harvest isn’t coming. But in this parable it points to how little say we have over whether or not something is going to grow. How does this passage change your level of expectation and understanding of how God works?
