Character Formation
1) Character doesn’t grow when it’s good, but when it’s hard.
2) We avoid the context of our character growth and in so doing forfeit the joy that is rightfully ours.
3) I’m not smart enough to willfully enter into character formation so God does it for me.
4) And when he either allows it or bring it into my life, he is good, so I count it as joy.

Your joy is your job

Comparison is the thief of joy. – Teddy Roosevelt

The enemy can’t take what only God can give.

Nothing steals joy faster than constantly asking if you’re happy.

If you’re the one killing your joy, you’re also in perfect position to recover your joy.

I can’t receive God’s joy for me in the way God gives it to them.

Faith is single-bucket accounting.

Your joy will never exceed the quality of your character.

As you reflect on the message this week, use some of these questions to consider how God might be working within and around you.

Questions for Reflection:

  • In what ways do you kill your own joy? Where are you letting the circumstances around you “steal” your joy?

  • Why do you think comparison is considered the thief of joy? Where do you find yourself comparing yourself to others?

  • What would it look like for you to count the joy in your life? What does it mean to notice the joy set before you?

  • What steps do you need to take to focus on joy? Where can we make having joy easier?
